Accepting both HTG mobile money and USD cards when Stripe isn't available in Haiti

Our customers are split between people in Haiti (MonCash/NatCash, gourdes) and the diaspora (cards, dollars). Stripe doesn't onboard Haitian businesses directly. What are realistic options?

Use a two-rail setup and let the customer's situation pick the rail:

Rail 1: local mobile money in HTG. MonCash (and NatCash once you have access) for customers in Haiti. It's the dominant way people pay online locally.

Rail 2: cards in USD for the diaspora. Common routes, each with legal and tax implications to check with an accountant:

  • A merchant account with a Haitian bank. Several banks offer card acquiring or e-commerce payment gateways for local businesses. Ask your bank's business department.
  • A payment processor that supports your business's country and currency. Availability changes over time, so check each provider's current list of supported countries before building.
  • A legal entity abroad (common for diaspora-facing startups) that uses a mainstream processor, with proper accounting between the two entities.

Product tips:

  • Detect country or currency at checkout, but let people switch. Plenty of diaspora customers pay for relatives in Haiti with MonCash, and vice versa.
  • Store amounts with their currency (amount_cents, currency), and never mix HTG and USD in one column.
  • If one order can be paid in either currency, fix the exchange rate at order time and record it.

Your PaymentProvider interface makes adding the card rail later a contained change, rather than a rewrite.
